Churdan library tells summer reading plans

The Churdan public library is excited to begin its summer reading program, Imagine Your Story.

Each week youngsters will get a Grab-n- Go story time sack filled with a craft, a snack, a small prize, and a library book. Parents of children who would like to pick up a sack at the library can call 515-389-3423 daily between 1 and 5 pm to reserve a sack.

Library staff will also host a story time each week using Zoom. In addition to weekly story time, the library will sponsor a scavenger hunt, a story on the Lions Club walking path, and a car picnic.  Many other socially distant activities will also be available throughout the summer.

Summer reading can help prevent loss of skills children learned in the previous grade. Without it, children start the next year playing catch, known as the “summer slide.” “This year more than ever, the Churdan library is eager to do whatever it can so children don’t experience the summer slide,” children’s librarian Marilyn Tilley said.

This event is sponsored partially from funds received through Communities 4 Children and Community Partnerships for Protecting Children neighborhood/community network mini grants.
